A female seminary opens, later Charnwood Institute
The city’s 2000 National Register documentation says the Tyler Female Seminary opened in 1851, became Charnwood Institute on South Fannin Avenue at East Charnwood Street, and burned and was rebuilt after the Civil War.
The Handbook of Texas says Professor J. T. Hand opened Charnwood Institute, a boarding school that became well known in the state, in 1865.
Note
The sources date Charnwood Institute differently, and neither says they describe one school. The Handbook gives the name Tyler Female Seminary to another school, Tyler University’s women’s department.
