A log courthouse, Tyler’s first civic building

Smith County built a log courthouse on the north side of the Tyler square in 1847, the town’s first civic building.

Another log courthouse replaced it that same year in the center of the square, and in 1852 a new, larger brick courthouse replaced that one.

Note

The state’s courthouse inventory lists log courthouses of 1846 and 1848 rather than two of 1847.
