Voters fund the county’s first paved roads

In 1919 Smith County voters approved a $1,000,000 bond for the county’s first paved roads.

In 1921 the first concrete-paved road in the county was built, 3.5 miles on the Tyler-Dallas Highway.

Note

The Handbook of Texas calls the 1921 Dixie Highway, from Tyler to Winona, the county’s first hard-surface road; it was built of iron ore, gravel, asphalt and crushed limestone, not concrete. Both firsts can be true.
