The Methodists’ Sunday school, called “the first”

In 1852 Tyler’s Methodists organized what the city’s National Register documentation calls “the first Sunday School,” in the home of Reverend Wells, four years after an 1848 revival led them to leave the town’s union services.

Note

“The first Sunday School” is the documentation’s phrase. Read in context it is the Methodists’ first, not necessarily the town’s.
