Tyler is authorized as a county seat

On April 11, 1846, the Texas Legislature created Smith County and its county seat.

The town was named for President John Tyler, for his support of admitting Texas to the Union.

The 1936 centennial marker gives the county’s two founding dates: created April 11, 1846, and organized July 13, 1846.
