Tyler’s Catholics become a parish
Tyler’s Catholic congregation began as a mission served by priests who rode to Tyler from Nacogdoches and Palestine.
It became a permanent parish with 200 members in 1880 (many early parishioners were Irish railroad workers), and built its first Church of the Immaculate Conception in 1882 at North College Avenue and West Locust Street.
