Camp Fannin becomes a tuberculosis sanatorium
In 1947 the Texas Legislature authorized purchase of the closed Camp Fannin site from the federal government and chartered the East Texas Tuberculosis Sanatorium there.
A year after renovation began in 1948, 122 patients arrived by train from Kerrville, and the first patients slept on cots until hospital beds were issued in 1952.
It later became the University of Texas Health Center at Tyler.
Note
The Handbook’s Camp Fannin entry says the base became the sanatorium the year after 1947, in 1948.
