The first railroad reaches Tyler

The first railroad reached Tyler in 1873–74; the sources give the span, not a single year.

One Handbook of Texas entry says the Houston and Great Northern built through Tyler in 1873 on its route from Troup to Mineola; another says the line began service on its branch to Tyler in April 1874.

The locally backed Tyler Tap Railroad ran its own first train into Tyler in 1877.

Note

Sources differ on the year: the 2001 Tyler cover document and the Handbook’s Tyler Tap entry say April 1873; the Handbook’s Tyler entry and the downtown nomination say April 1874.
