The Tyler Municipal Rose Garden officially opens
The Tyler Municipal Rose Garden officially opened in 1952 with nearly 3,000 bushes donated by local nurseries.
The city had acquired the land in 1912, and the garden was designed as a WPA project in 1938; the city puts the federal grant for the park and rose garden project at $181,255.
Its 2019 National Register nomination calls it the largest municipal rose garden in the United States by size and number of roses, more than 38,000 in spring 2018; in 1960 it ranked second to the Columbus, Ohio, Park of Roses.
Note
“Largest” is the nomination’s word, and its count is from the spring of 2018.
